These documentary retellings stay close to the witness perspective: who was there, where and when the encounter happened, what the light, animal, or figure did, and how the surrounding community responded. The settings are part of the evidence—coal roads, logging cuts, ridgelines, river bottoms, fog, night driving, and the working landscapes of the Appalachian region.
Every account is followed by a careful examination of possible explanations, including:
- Deer affected by disease, injury, or unusual behavior
- Escaped animals, misidentification, and distant lights
- Refraction, headlights, hoaxes, and local rumor
- Folk traditions retold as personal experience
- Claims that remain unresolved because the available record cannot establish more
The book also considers the long record of the Brown Mountain Lights as watched from Wiseman's View, the newspaper rivalry between the Dwayyo and the Snallygaster, the story placed upon Fort Mountain's wall, and the continuing Cherokee telling of Raven Mocker and Spearfinger. Unverified claims are identified plainly rather than dressed up as proven fact.
By the final chapter, readers will be able to distinguish reported experience from interpretation, place Appalachian mysteries in their real geographic and cultural settings, and weigh competing explanations without losing sight of what the witnesses actually said.
