Kindle and Paperback Not Linked on Amazon? Check the Author Name First
TL;DR
Amazon links a Kindle edition and a paperback automatically when the title and author name match letter for letter. The most common mismatch is a middle initial or punctuation in the author field, like "Jane M. Smith" on one and "Jane Smith" on the other. Paperback title and author lock once published, so change the ebook to match the paperback, wait a few days, and ask KDP support to link the two ASINs if it still hasn't happened.
What unlinked editions look like
Search your book on Amazon and look at the format buttons under the title. If the paperback page doesn't offer a Kindle option, or the Kindle page doesn't offer a paperback, your editions aren't linked. Amazon is treating them as two unrelated books.
That costs you more than tidiness:
- Reviews don't pool. Ratings are shared across linked formats. Unlinked, a review on the paperback does nothing for the Kindle page.
- Shoppers can't switch formats. Someone who lands on the paperback and prefers ebooks has no button to click.
- Your author page can split. Two spellings of your name can turn into two author identities.
The usual cause: one character
Amazon links formats on its own, usually within a few days of both going live, but only when the title and the author name match exactly. Small differences are enough to stop it:
- A middle initial on one and not the other ("Jane M. Smith" vs "Jane Smith")
- Different punctuation or spacing ("J.R." vs "J. R.")
- A subtitle typed into the title field on one edition
- A co-author or illustrator listed on only one format
Open both editions in your KDP Bookshelf and compare the Book Details pages side by side, field by field. Copy the text into a plain document if you need to. A stray space is easy to miss on screen.
While you're fixing the details, paste your book's Amazon link into the free Amazon Book Optimizer. It reads your live listing and returns the exact categories, keyword slots, and title, series, cover and price fixes for each format.
Which edition to change
Change the ebook to match the paperback, even if you like the ebook's version better.
Once a paperback is published, its title and author are tied to its ISBN and KDP won't let you edit them. The ebook details can still be edited. Fix the author name or title on the Kindle edition's eBook Details page and republish. It goes back through review, usually within a day or two, and the book stays on sale in the meantime.
If they still don't link
Give it about three days after the corrected ebook goes live. If the format buttons still don't appear, contact KDP support through the Contact Us link in your KDP account, choose the product page or linking option, and ask them to link the two editions. Include both ASINs (the paperback's 10-character number and the Kindle's, which starts with B0). Support can link editions by hand once the details match.
While you're there, check Author Central and make sure both editions are claimed under the same author profile.
FAQ
How long does Amazon take to link a paperback and Kindle edition?
When the details match, usually a few days after both are live. If it's been a week, look for a mismatch first, then contact support.
Can the subtitle be different on each format?
Keep them the same. Different subtitles are a common reason linking stalls, and there's no upside to a mismatch.
Will editing the Kindle author name affect my sales or rank?
The book stays on sale while the edit is reviewed. Linking usually helps, because shoppers on either page can see both formats and the shared reviews.
