KDP Keeps Rejecting My Paperback Cover, But It Fits the Template. Why?

TL;DR

Fitting the KDP template proves placement, not correctness. Repeat paperback cover rejections usually come from one of four things the template can't see: cover text that doesn't match Book Details letter for letter, a spine sized for a different page count, spine text on a book under 79 pages, or low-resolution images and unembedded fonts. Read the exact sentence in the rejection email, fix that one thing, and stop re-uploading the same file.

What the template actually checks

The KDP cover template shows the trim lines, the bleed, the spine, the safe zone and the barcode box. If your art and text sit inside those lines, your layout is right.

That's all it proves. KDP's review also compares the cover against your book's details and your interior file, and the template has no way to show you that. So a cover can fit every dotted line and still fail every time, and each re-upload of the same file fails the same way.

The four causes behind most repeat rejections

1. The cover text doesn't match Book Details.

KDP compares the title, subtitle and author name on the front cover with what you typed on the Paperback Details page. They have to match, letter for letter. Common mismatches:

  • A subtitle on the cover that isn't in the Subtitle field, or the other way around
  • "Jane M. Smith" on the cover and "Jane Smith" in the author field
  • A series name or tagline styled like part of the title

Fix whichever side is easier. If the paperback hasn't been published yet, you can still edit the details.

2. The spine is sized for a different page count.

Spine width comes straight from the page count of the interior you uploaded. If you edited the manuscript after making the cover, even by a few pages, the spine and the total cover width are now wrong. Download a fresh template for the current page count, or recalculate, and rebuild the cover to it.

3. Spine text on a thin book.

KDP doesn't allow any spine text below 79 pages, and it wants 1/16 inch (0.0625 in) of clear space on each side of the text. Thin books that pass the page minimum can still fail if the lettering runs to the spine's edges.

4. Image resolution and fonts.

KDP wants images at 300 DPI at printed size and fonts embedded in the PDF. A cover built from a web-sized image, or exported without embedding fonts, can fail even though it looks fine on your screen.

Read the rejection email first

Before you change anything, open the rejection email and copy the exact sentence that says what's wrong. KDP's wording is generic, but it does point to a category: content mismatch, dimensions, spine, or image quality. Fix that one thing.

If the wording is unclear, paste it into our free KDP rejection decoder, which translates the common messages into what to change. To check cause 1 in a minute, the free cover match checker compares the text on your cover with your KDP title, subtitle and author fields.

When to stop doing it yourself

Five rejections on the same cover usually means the file and the book details have drifted apart in more than one place. Our manuscript formatting service rebuilds the interior and a matching full-wrap cover together, with the spine sized to the final page count, so the two can't disagree.

FAQ

Does a cover that fits the KDP template always pass?

No. The template checks placement only. Text that doesn't match the title fields, a spine for the wrong page count, or low-resolution art can still get it rejected.

Do I need a new cover every time my page count changes?

Yes. The spine width depends on the page count, so the full cover width changes too. Rebuild it at the final page count.

Will re-uploading the same cover ever work?

Only when the problem is on Amazon's side, which is rare for cover rejections. If the email names a specific problem, change the file before uploading again.
