KDP "Error Processing Interior" or "Error Processing Cover"? Waiting Won't Fix It

TL;DR

A KDP processing error means it couldn't open or convert your PDF. The usual causes are a file that's too large, a password or security setting on the PDF, unflattened layers or transparency from a design app, or a PDF exported for screens instead of print. Re-export as a flattened print-quality PDF with no security, check the size, and upload the new file. Once it processes, check the bleed setting next, since art to the edge with No bleed selected is the next common error.

What the error actually means

KDP's upload has two stages. First it has to read and convert your file. Only after that does it check margins, bleed and content. "Error processing interior" or "Error processing cover" means the first stage failed: KDP couldn't open the file properly.

That's why advice like "wait a few hours" or "try again tomorrow" rarely works. The same file fails the same way.

The usual causes

  • File size. Very large PDFs, often photo or illustrated books with uncompressed images, can fail or time out. Compress the images at 300 DPI at printed size rather than full camera resolution.
  • Security settings. A password, or restrictions on printing or editing, can stop KDP from reading the PDF. Export without any security.
  • Layers and transparency. Files from design apps (Canva, Affinity, InDesign, Photoshop) can carry live layers, transparency and effects. Flatten the PDF on export.
  • Screen-quality export. A PDF saved as "smallest file size" or for web can drop the data a printer needs. Export the print version, or PDF/X-1a if your app offers it.

How to export a file KDP can read

  1. Go back to the source file, not the PDF that keeps failing.
  2. Export with the print-quality preset (PDF Print, High Quality Print or PDF/X-1a).
  3. Tick Flatten if the app offers it, and turn off any password or permissions.
  4. Check the file size. If it's huge, compress the images and export again.
  5. Upload the new file. If one browser keeps stalling on a large upload, try another.

The next error to expect

When the file processes, KDP starts checking the layout. A common next problem with illustrated books is art that runs to the page edge while No bleed is selected. If images touch the edge, the pages need to be trim plus bleed (6.125 x 9.25 for a 6 x 9 book) and you choose Bleed in the print options. The free KDP margin calculator gives the exact page size for your trim.

If KDP gives you a different message, paste it into the free KDP rejection decoder to see what it usually means and what to change.

When it's still failing

If a fresh print-quality export still won't process, something in the source file is unusual, often an embedded object or a corrupt image. Our manuscript formatting service rebuilds the interior and cover as clean print PDFs from your files, including illustrated books.

FAQ

How long should KDP take to process an upload?

Usually a few minutes, longer for large files. If it ends with an error rather than finishing, the file needs to change. Waiting won't help.

Can I get both "error processing interior" and "error processing cover" at once?

Yes. They're checked separately, and books made in the same design app often hit the same export problem in both files. Fix both exports the same way.

Does KDP accept Word files for paperbacks?

It does, but a PDF you exported yourself gives you control over what prints. For illustrated or designed books, upload a print PDF.
