KDP Author Copies: Real Costs, Real Timelines, and the Per-Marketplace Trick

What an author copy actually is

An author copy is your book printed at cost: you pay the same printing charge Amazon pays itself, plus shipping, and nobody makes a margin. That one fact explains most of the surprises:

• Prime doesn't apply. Prime shipping is subsidized by product margin. Author copies have none, so you pay shipping — and it scales with quantity, with a per-book discount as orders grow.
• They're slow. Your order enters the print queue behind customer orders and ships by economical methods. Two to three weeks door to door is normal; the on-screen delivery estimate is padded and copies routinely arrive before it.
• They're print-on-demand. There is no warehouse stack of your book. Every author copy is manufactured after you order it.

Customer orders are the opposite case: a full-price purchase by a Prime member typically arrives in a few days like any other Amazon product, because it's a normal retail sale.

The per-marketplace trick

Here's the detail that surprises even experienced authors: author copies are ordered per marketplace, not per account country.

When you order author copies, KDP asks which marketplace to print from. Your KDP account being registered in the US doesn't chain you to US printing. If your book has worldwide distribution, it's live on Amazon's other marketplaces — and you can order author copies printed by the facility that serves the marketplace nearest your shipping address.

For an author living in Japan with a US KDP account, that's the difference between a month-long trans-Pacific wait and domestic delivery from Japanese printing — which is also frequently cheaper per unit and, many authors report, printed on noticeably better paper stock. The same logic applies to authors in Europe ordering from a European marketplace instead of the US, and so on.

The constraints are only these: the book must be live on the marketplace you pick, that marketplace must support author copies for your format, and the printer must ship to your address. No account migration, no republishing, no losing your reviews — those drastic “fixes” sometimes suggested in forums are unnecessary for this problem and actively harmful (republishing under a new account forfeits your reviews and sales history).

Getting charged shipping on a retail copy with Prime?

A recurring confusion worth untangling: an author buys their own book at full retail price, has Prime, and still sees a shipping charge. Two usual causes:

1. Marketplace mismatch. Prime memberships don't cross marketplaces. A Prime membership on one Amazon site doesn't cover an order placed on another — and authors, more than most customers, end up ordering from foreign marketplaces.
2. The seller wasn't Amazon. If the buy box was held by a third-party seller at that moment, Prime shipping doesn't apply. Check the order details for “Ships from and sold by.”

Neither has anything to do with your book being print-on-demand; POD paperbacks sold by Amazon are Prime-eligible like anything else.

Practical ordering guide

• Order proofs when the book is still in draft (they print with a “Not for Resale” band); order author copies once it's live.
• For events or launches, order at least three weeks ahead, and treat the shown delivery date as a worst case.
• Ordering in bulk lowers the effective per-book shipping.
• International authors: check whether your nearest marketplace prints your trim size and paper type — most standard formats are supported at all major facilities.
